I still vividly remember my college trip to Cuernavaca with Canisius College, a trip that took us to Hotel La Joyita, a boutique gem tucked away in the lush gardens of the city. La Joyita means “the little jewel,” and it truly lived up to its name. From the moment our group arrived, I could tell this place was something special. It wasn’t a massive, overwhelming resort, but a serene and intimate hideaway that felt like a retreat from the world. The hotel’s design stood out to me right away. The architecture was classic Mexican colonial style, with whitewashed walls, terracotta roofs, and vibrant bougainvillea draping over almost every surface. The gardens were breathtaking, filled with towering palm trees, colorful flowers, and little pathways leading to secluded spots where you could just sit and take in the beauty of it all. There were only a handful of rooms, which made it feel like we had the place all to ourselves, a luxury that added to the intimate, peaceful vibe. Each morning, I’d wake up to the sound of birds singing outside my window, the air fresh and crisp in that way it only seems to be in places like Cuernavaca. The breakfasts were simple yet perfect, often consisting of freshly made local dishes like chilaquiles, fruit, and some of the best coffee I’ve ever tasted. We’d sit by the pool, which was surrounded by greenery, and just take it all in before heading out for the day’s adventures. What made the experience even more magical was Cuernavaca itself. Known as the “City of Eternal Spring,” it’s a place rich with history, culture, and an almost otherworldly beauty. The weather was perfect—always warm but never too hot, which made exploring the city a joy. Our professor, Tim, guided us through its storied past, blending the history of Mexico with the personal stories of Cuernavaca’s people and places. One of the most memorable spots we visited was the Palacio de Cortés, a grand building constructed in the 1520s by Hernán Cortés after his conquest of the Aztec Empire. The palace itself is a marvel, filled with artifacts and murals that depict Mexico’s tumultuous colonial history. Diego Rivera’s murals inside the palace, in particular, stood out to me. They were not just art but a vivid retelling of Mexico’s past, from the pre-Columbian era to the Spanish conquest. It was amazing to stand in a place that had been at the heart of so much historical change. Cuernavaca’s Cathedral was another highlight. It’s one of the oldest churches in Mexico, and walking through its cool, quiet interior felt like stepping back in time. The simplicity of the architecture, combined with the beauty of its murals and the deep sense of history, left a lasting impression on me. But Cuernavaca isn’t all history. There’s a modern vibrancy to the city that we experienced when exploring its streets and markets. I remember wandering through the local markets with my classmates, the smells of street food filling the air—tacos, fresh tortillas, roasted corn, and more. The people were so welcoming, and it felt like we were getting a true taste of Mexican culture, not just as tourists but as students eager to learn and engage. Returning to Hotel La Joyita after long days of exploring was the perfect way to unwind. I’d take a dip in the pool or just sit in the gardens, reflecting on everything we’d seen and learned that day. At night, the city would quiet down, and the only sounds were the gentle rustle of palm leaves and the distant hum of nightlife. It was peaceful in a way that’s hard to describe, a tranquility that felt almost sacred.

My husband’s family is from Cuernavaca and we were in town for a wedding and the bride recommended La Joyita. It’s a beautiful little hidden jewel- rooms are Mexican rustic chic, spacious, comfortable, nicely air conditioned and our bathroom was huge with nice hot shower/good water pressure. My favorite part of the hotel was the Mexican breakfast/restaurant. Service was amazing and food was authentic and so delicious! We are planning to stay here every time we visit Cuerna. Also, we have two kids and they were very kid friendly and the pool is great and heated!
